The actually-useful directory for USMLE Step 3.
Curated qbanks, CCS simulators, Anki decks, podcasts, and free guides. No upsells. No paywalls on the picks. Updated for the 2026 format.
2026 Format Changes
The NBME updated Step 3 in March 2026. Short version:
| Component | Before | Now (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| CCS cases (Day 2) | 13 | 9 |
| CCS testing time | 5.4 hours | 3.75 hours |
| Passing score | 198 | 200 |
| MCQ blocks (Day 1 & 2) | Unchanged | |
Don't drastically cut your MCQ study time just because there are fewer CCS cases. The MCQ section timing is the same.
CCS Simulators
CCS is the most under-prepared section. Start with the free official Primum demo, then learn a system before grinding cases.
| Resource | Cost | Free trial | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| StudyCCS | Varies | Yes | Structured framework for CCS cases: master the approach in about an hour, then apply it. Best option for residents short on time who want a clear system rather than endless case volume. |
| Official USMLE Primum Demo | Free | - | Free download from USMLE.org. Learn the interface before paying for anything else. Many test anxiety issues trace back to fumbling with Primum on test day. |
| UWorld CCS Cases | Included w/ UWorld | - | 51 interactive cases mirroring Primum. Solid practice if you already have UWorld. No extra cost. |
| CCSCases.com | $$ | Sample | 180+ cases with 20,000+ orderable items, closer to the real test's free-text order entry. Good for residents who want high case volume. |
| MasterCCS | $$ | Yes | Tutor mode, AI feedback, full-length exams with the real interface. Modern platform if you want volume plus feedback. |
| Archer Review CCS | $$ | Sample | ~35 hours of video walkthroughs. Good if you learn by watching someone work through a case. Passive. Supplement with active simulator reps. |
Qbanks
Buy one, do it twice if you have time. UWorld first.
| Resource | Cost | Free trial | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UWorld Step 3 | $319+/90 days | 7 days | The default backbone of Step 3 prep. 2,100+ MCQs with detailed explanations. Includes 51 interactive CCS cases bundled in. If you can only buy one thing, buy this. |
| AMBOSS Step 3 | Subscription | 5 days | 2,000+ MCQs. The integrated AMBOSS medical library is a real differentiator. Note: CCS cases not included. Pair with a dedicated CCS resource. |
| MDSteps | $ | Yes | Newer adaptive qbank with a built-in CCS simulator. Worth a free-trial look. |
| CanadaQBank Step 3 | $ (budget) | Limited | Smaller bank, cheap. Used widely by IMGs. Good for supplementing after UWorld. |
| Kaplan QBank Step 3 | $$ | Sample | Solid second-line option if you've burned through UWorld. |
Anki Decks
| Resource | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AnKing Step Deck | AnkiHub subscription | The current deck (v12) via AnkiHub. Covers Steps 1–3 with daily community updates. The standard Anki pick for Step 3. |
| AnkiHub Scholarship | Free (need-based) | Can't afford AnkiHub? Apply for their scholarship. Significantly underused. Most people don't know it exists. |
| AnkiWeb Shared Decks | Free | Community-uploaded decks. Useful for niche topics. Search "USMLE Step 3" on AnkiWeb. |
| Med School Bootcamp | Bundled | Bootcamp content is tagged inside AnKing (`#Bootcamp`), not a separate deck. Solid if you already use Bootcamp. |
Free & Official Resources
No excuses not to use these.

| USMLE Step 3 Content Outline | Official topic list | Print it. Tick off topics as you cover them. Any uncovered topic from this list is a gap. |
| Mehlman Medical (free PDFs) | Ethics, biostats, drug ad questions | The go-to free resource for topics nobody teaches well but that appear consistently on the exam. |
Books
Reference tools, not primary sources. Don't read any of these cover to cover.
| Book | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First Aid for USMLE Step 3 | $$ | Use as a reference for unfamiliar topics. Most residents skim it once. |
| Master the Boards Step 3 (Fischer) | $$ | Older but still popular among IM residents. Good high-yield clinical summaries. |
| Crush Step 3 CCS | $$ | Worked CCS case examples. Useful supplement to simulator practice, not a replacement. |
